Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level I (ages 3-6)

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori.  Children gather in an “atrium”, a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials they use to help them absorb the most essential proclamations of the Catholic faith.  The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a sensorial rich experience that gives children the opportunity to grow in love and knowledge of God through the Catholic tradition.  This program is offered to children ages 3-6 during the 10:00 Sunday Mass.

One year is required at this level before their sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and Eucharist.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Level II (ages 7-9) or grades 2, 3, and 4

We hope to be starting a Level II Atrium for this age group.  However, if our teachers are not able to take the training this summer, it may be have to be delayed for a year.  The two instructors for these grades are Sharon Laing and Maureen-Girty Andrews.  Classes for these grades take place from 11:00-12:30 on Sunday mornings.

Fifth and Sixth Grade

Our fifth and sixth grade is still a traditional classroom model of instruction and we are currently seeking a couple of instructors to team teach this age group.  We would like to expand their curriculum with some service and social experiences as well.  They typically meet from 11:00-12:30 on Sunday mornings.

Grade 7 - Theology of the Body for Teens/Encounter Scripture Study

The fist 10-12 weeks of grade 7 is the program, Theology of the Body for Teensby Ascension Press.  This course answers the questions pre-teens have about their own bodies, issues of sexually morality, and how they are uniquely created for greatness in God’s own image.  A parent orientation meeting is required before students can begin this course.

After completion of this course, students will continue with a Scripture course entitled Encounter: Experiencing God in the Everyday.  This is a Catholic Bible study designed specifically for middle school teens that captivates students toward a powerful encounter with God!  Grade 7 will be held on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30.  John O’Connor is the instructor.

Grade 8 - Chosen: Your Journey Toward Confirmation

Confirmation is a two year program of learning and formation that begins in the eighth grade and continues with our ‘Being At Choice’ Program in the 9th grade.  Chosen challenges teens to fully embrace a life in Christ and His Church by “hearing the faith” in new and unexpected ways.  Teens will be inspired to a deep appreciation of the sacraments and learn from the examples of the saints.  Different forms of prayer and their practice (including Eucharistic Adoration) will also be introduced and encouraged on a regular basis.  Grade 8 will be held on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:30.  We are still looking for a couple instructors for this grade level.

Grade 9- 12 -‘Being At Choice’ Confirmation and Youth Ministry Program

Confirmation prep will continue in the 9th grade with the ‘Being At Choice’  Confirmation and Youth Ministry program.  This is a very unique process of formation based upon peer-to-peer ministry for the most part.  Through ice breakers, skits, DVD’s, fun recreational activities, service opportunities, prayer, and retreats, students develop very close bonds of Christian friendship with a common catholic vision that they will be able to own and defend in an increasingly hostile culture.  This program generally meets a couple times a month on a Sunday afternoon.  Carrie Baker is our part-time youth minister trying to build upon this program after the ninth grade with a number of social and service opportunities, but we need more high school-age involvement!
