Today’s Gospel makes it abundantly clear who we are as Jesus’ disciples: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

Today he also offers us another image: Be salt. Salt is used to preserve and to flavor. Are we “salt of the earth” kind of people? Do we preserve the message of Jesus? Do we bring “flavor” to the world in which we live? Today we are very much concerned about the sodium we eat. Many of us try to make sure our diet is low-fat, low salt, high fiber etc. That is surely good for our bodies, but don’t skimp on being the kind of “salt for the earth” Jesus invites us to be.

Ponder this:

How can I be salt for the earth in my situation?
